1L of normal saline to expand your intravascular volume. There's a reason 1L boluses are given so often in modern medical practice in so many different situations - it makes people feel better! A crystalloid solution such as .9% NS works to increase the amount of fluid being circulated within your bloodstream and help keep it there. An IV fluid-infusion can help in dehydrated states due to a wide variety of medical reasons such as: - Substance intoxication - Seasonal flu/garden variety colds - Gastroenteritis leading to excessive GI water losses - Persistent nausea/vomiting - Poor oral intake - Elderly population, particularly in summer While generally safe, it's important to note that a 1L bolus can cause problems in certain patients with lung, heart, kidney, or liver problems.
